XCEL COACHING

FAQs
How does coaching work?

Most of my clients prefer to meet twice a month, face-to-face or virtually. In some cases, weekly coaching makes sense (for example, there’s a real crisis in the business that MUST be resolved immediately), and for long-time clients, monthly “maintenance” coaching can work.  But twice a month is a good rhythm in large part because the point of coaching is to take specific actions, and those actions take time and energy to accomplish.

A typical coaching session is topic-driven, jointly agreed by us.  I have some 100 different tools, exercises, templates, etc., that I use in my coaching.  Expect our sessions to be intellectual – we’re doing some heavy thinking.  My job is to ask questions you haven’t thought to ask, and to ask questions you may not want to really know the answers to.

Coaching works best when we think of each other as peers.  Yes, you’re paying me, but I don’t work for you – I work with you.  Said another way, I take on the role of a non-equity partner in your business, just as determined to run a great business as you are.

My challenges are unique. Do you follow a “one-size-fits-all” approach, a program?

One of the things I like best about coaching is that every client IS unique, and so is their business. I cannot imagine making clients go through a structured program, like taking a class in school. No, we’ll devise an approach that is custom-designed for you, so you get  tangible results as quickly as possible.

What kind of results can I expect?

You’ll be more confident. You’ll be more focused, knowing better what you want out of your business and how to get it. You’ll become a better leader, skilled in engaging others in your vision and motivating the people you work with. You’ll improve top-line revenue, cash flow, and profitability.  I’ve coached more than 75 businesses on their path to $1M+ in gross revenue, and I’ve helped clients increase their income from the business by as much as $250k a year.

The whole point of hiring a coach is to get a vastly better result than what you’re getting now.  I’ll help you build a business that your customers love, your employees love, and one that you love.  In doing so, the financial and personal rewards will follow.

Of course, most of this depends upon you. If you’re willing to put in the time and effort, you’ll get the results you’re after. A coach is a guide: you’re the one making it happen.

Do I have to sign a contract?

I engage clients on a month-to-month basis because I believe that either of us should be free to walk away if the coaching relationship (which is a very personal one) isn’t working.  Aso, this approach forces me to bring high value to you every time, and I like the challenge of that.

How much time will our coaching take?

Generally, you’ll have 30 – 45 minutes of work to get ready for a session with me, and the coaching sessions last 90 – 120 minutes. This is time spent working “on” the business, digging into problems and challenges, exploring options, assessing pros and cons, and coming to decisions about specific actions that you (or your team) will take to improve the business.

So if we meet twice a month, you can expect to spend 4 – 5 hours a month devoted to working with me. 4 – 5 hours that will change the trajectory of your business and vastly accelerate its growth and the impact you’ll have on those you serve.

How can you help me become a better leader?

This is an area where I have tremendous passion and some mad skills. Most of my clients hire me to develop their leadership skills, whether they’re running a $500K business with a couple of employees or they’re running a $25M business with an executive team who, in turn, lead other people. I integrate the teachings of people like John Maxwell, Brian Tracy, Darren Hardy, Patrick Lencioni, Brene Brown and many others to help my clients develop and perfect their leadership skills.

Do you work with non-profit organizations?

Of course!  Non-profits face the same challenges that for-profit businesses do:  how do I better serve my clients with the team and resources I have at my disposal?

My profits aren’t where they should be – can you help with that?

You have to be on top of your numbers to succeed in business. I’m a strong believer that my clients need to master basic financial principles, so they understand exactly how to improve cash flow and profitability.  I’m an expert in the use of metrics to manage the daily/weekly/monthly activities that lead to the results you’re after. As someone who focuses on service delivery, I’m all about increasing throughput and productivity in your business.  And when you do that, higher profits will follow.

I love my business but employee turnover and drama take a lot of the fun out of it. How could you help me?

Welcome to the world of business!  What’s that saying about how much fun business would be if only we didn’t have employees or customers?  I digress…

So how do you create a business that your employees love?  One that they’re loyal to, to the point they’ll recommend that their friends come work there, too?  The answer, of course, is to build a tremendous culture.  When we work on leadership we’ll also be working on the culture of your business (the way people think, act and interact) because your culture is a direct result of your personal leadership.

It’s also a question of having the right people in the right seats.  This past year alone I’ve helped 6 companies hire key employees for specific roles by making sure they have a well-designed recruitment and hiring process, including the use of assessments such as DISC and Kolbe.

If we can build a great culture and place people into roles that capitalize on their skills and go-to behaviors, the drama will disappear, replaced by high performance and productivity.
